Lindsay Lohan, Winona Ryder, Farrah Fawcett, Britney Spears – one thing they all have in common besides their celebrity status is a predilection for the five-finger discount, usually for small ticket items too.

The Mugshot

I’m sure most of us have stolen at one point or another, but when celebrities who are in the public eye and have money to spare shoplift, you can’t help but wonder at the motivation. Lack of funds? Unlikely in most of these cases (I think Britney Spears could probably afford to buy a lighter from a gas station). Is it the adrenaline rush? Kleptomania? Or just a sense of entitlement?

Whatever the case, you can now add celebrated Reds pitcher Mike Leake to the long list of celebrity shoplifters. Mike Leake, who got a $2.3 million signing bonus in 2009 and is on his way to making over $400,000 this year, was arrested and put in jail after walking out of a Macy’s in downtown Cincinnati with six American Rag t-shirts with their tags removed.

So the total cost for the Rag shirts? $60. Tsk tsk Mikey. At least a big item theft would make sense. I buy my badass car and motorcycle tees from nopooh.com (I’m not rich enough to shoplift) — they’re a little pricier and a lot badass-ier. So what are the next steps for Mike Leake? Shoplifting rehab? Public apology? Banned from baseball for life? I think I speak for most people when I say “huh? Are we still talking about Mike Leake?”
